Should We Raise The Federal Government Debt Ceiling?

The next big fiscal debate will be on the impending collision with the federal government's debt ceiling.  When the debate on raising the debt ceiling begins in earnest, it will sound much like the debate on the most recent continuing resolution.  Except this time, President Obama is on much shakier political ground.  In 2006, on one of the few occasions that Senator Barack Obama made a vote that was not cast as “present,” he voted against raising the debt ceiling.  Before that vote, Senator Obama had this to say about raising the debt ceiling:

The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies.

Over the past 5 years, our federal debt has increased by $3.5 trillion to $8.6 trillion. That is “trillion” with a “T.” That is money that we have borrowed from the Social Security trust fund, borrowed from China and Japan, borrowed from American taxpayers. And over the next 5 years, between now and 2011, the President’s budget will increase the debt by almost another $3.5 trillion.

Numbers that large are sometimes hard to understand. Some people may wonder why they matter. Here is why: This year, the Federal Government will spend $220 billion on interest. That is more money to pay interest on our national debt than we’ll spend on Medicaid and the State Children’s Health Insurance Program. That is more money to pay interest on our debt this year than we will spend on education, homeland security, transportation, and veterans benefits combined. It is more money in one year than we are likely to spend to rebuild the devastated gulf coast in a way that honors the best of America.

And the cost of our debt is one of the fastest growing expenses in the Federal budget. This rising debt is a hidden domestic enemy, robbing our cities and States of critical investments in infrastructure like bridges, ports, and levees; robbing our families and our children of critical investments in education and health care reform; robbing our seniors of the retirement and health security they have counted on.

Every dollar we pay in interest is a dollar that is not going to investment in America’s priorities.

Well said, Senator Obama!

Business By The Book

I'm currently reading Larry Burkett's best-selling book, BUSINESS BY THE BOOK. He relates that our Federal Government debt is 6 trillion dollars and growing. He also states that we have to borrow 150 billion dollars a year just to pay the interest on the debt. These financial statistics were current in 1998. I wonder what Larry would think of our current 14 trillion dollar debt and Obama's proposed 2012 budget that has a deficit of over 1.6 TRILLION dollars?

Truthfulness

"The Lord detests lying lips. Be He delights in men who are truthful."   Proverbs 12:22

Have you ever wondered why lying seems easier that simply telling the truth?  It is a mystery to me.

Political Insanity!

We only have one party in the United States.... THE WAR PARTY! It doesn't matter whether we elect a Democrat or a Republican President. All of them get us involved in unconstitutional wars that have brought our nation to the brink of bankruptcy. There's only one word for it..... INSANITY!

Let us gather often to encourage one another and sing praises to our Creator.

How did sermons ever creep their way into our worship experiences.

God's Ways Are Counter-Intuitive

The World Says                                                               God says

Pride is important                                                              Humility is essential

Success                                                                           Obedience

Competition                                                                       Service

Save your life                                                                     Lose your life for my sake

Accomplishments                                                              Character

Walk by sight                                                                    Walk by faith

Seek revenge                                                                     Do good to your persecutors

Which path will you choose today?
